Suarez (shoulder) said Saturday that he will be shut down from throwing for about three weeks, Matt Weyrich of The Baltimore Sun reports.
Suarez was moved to the 60-day IL on Monday after being diagnosed with a right subscapularis strain. He'll now also be pulled off his throwing program until an MRI shows that his shoulder has begun healing, and he isn't scheduled to be re-evaluated until early May. A timeline for his return may emerge once he's cleared to resume throwing.

Suarez was placed on the 15-day IL in late March with what the team had referred to as shoulder inflammation. However, the Orioles are now labeling his injury as a right subscapularis strain, and Suarez's absence will be much longer than initially anticipated, likely costing him months, per Jake Rill of MLB.com. Baltimore acquired left-hander Grant Wolfram via trade Monday and shifted Suarez to the 60-day IL to clear a spot on the 40-man roster.

Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said Monday that he's hopeful Suarez's (shoulder) stint on the 15-day injured list won't be long, Andy Kostka of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports.
Hyde revealed that Suarez first began experiencing right shoulder discomfort toward the end of spring training and was having trouble getting loose, necessitating placement on the IL Sunday. Suarez is receiving treatment and it sounds like he could be back when first eligible or close to it.

Cade Povich won the battle to be Baltimore's No. 5 starter, so Suarez will open the campaign in relief. The right-hander should again work as a swingman in 2025 but may have a difficult time replicating the 24 regular-season starts he made last season. Suarez is battling with Cade Povich for Baltimore's final rotation spot to begin the year in Grayson Rodriguez's (elbow) stead, and Sunday's effort should help his case of beginning 2025 as a starter. After giving up seven runs across 4.1 innings in exhibition play during February, Suarez has bounced back with a 2.84 ERA and 1.18 WHIP with 12 strikeouts over 12.2 frames in March. It's possible the veteran right-hander gets one more spring start before the Orioles make a final decision between Suarez and Povich.

Suarez made 24 starts among his 32 appearances last season, pitching to a respectable 3.70 ERA and 1.29 WHIP over 133.2 total innings for Baltimore. He struggled to a 6.20 ERA in September and was left off the wild-card roster, but the 35-year-old righty will have a chance to return to the rotation mix in his second season back in the majors following an extended stint overseas between Japan and Korea. While lacking in terms of strikeouts, Suarez will be a streaming candidate against lesser opponents if he's making regular starts for the Orioles, which doesn't seem far fetched given the question marks on the starting staff.

Suarez closed out the 2024 regular season with a quality start, allowing a couple of solo homers but limiting the Twins to just three additional baserunners. It was a nice bounce-back effort for Suarez, who had allowed eight earned runs over his previous two starts spanning 8.2 innings. After having allowed just eight home runs through his first 27 appearances (109 innings) this year, Suarez has been tagged for nine long balls over his last five starts and 24.2 innings. The propensity for giving up the long ball will be a concern as the Orioles set their postseason pitching staff.

The right-hander will be difficult to trust in his final start of the season, scheduled for next weekend against the Twins.
