Diamondbacks' Ketel Marte: Plays in extended spring game
Marte (hamstring) hit a pair of home runs and played three innings in the field in an extended spring training game Saturday, Kellan Olson of Arizona Sports reports.
Arizona manager Torey Lovullo was enthused by Marte's progress in his rehab and hasn't ruled out the second baseman returning for the second end of a two-city road trip next week. The Diamondbacks begin a series Tuesday against the Mets then move on to Philadelphia for the weekend. Alternatively, Marte could remain back in Arizona and rejoin the team for a seven-game homestand beginning the following Monday, May 5. Lovullo kicked around the idea of easing Marte back into the lineup as a designated hitter against lefties only. The organization is keenly aware of Marte's history of hamstring issues.

Marte began swinging a bat a week ago and has moved to the next step in his recovery. There's still no word of when the second baseman can begin a rehab assignment. The Diamondbacks are getting by with a combination of Tim Tawa and Garrett Hampson at the keystone.

As Marte begins baseball activities, his timeline has become more clear. Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo estimated a return for the final week of April or the first week of May. Diamondbacks' Ketel Marte: Will miss significant time
Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said Tuesday that Marte will miss a "series of weeks" with a left hamstring strain, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports. "There's no timeline on it," Lovullo said while referring to the injury as a Grade 1 strain. "We just gotta let him heal, let him recover and once we get to that point, we'll start to initiate some baseball activities."
Marte sustained the injury last Friday during the Diamondbacks' recent road trip and underwent an MRI when the club returned to Arizona on Monday. His absence leaves a hole in the Arizona lineup, which is being filled defensively by Tim Tawa and Garrett Hampson for now. Geraldo Perdomo has taken over Marte's spot in the order, serving as the leadoff batter against lefties and batting second against right-handers.

Diamondbacks' Ketel Marte: Gets $116M extension
The Diamondbacks signed Marte to a six-year, $116.5 million contract extension Wednesday that includes a player option for the 2032 season, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports.
Marte was already under contract through 2027 with a club option for 2028, but this new deal adds additional years and $64 million in new money, $46 million of which is deferred. The 31-year-old second baseman slashed .292/.372/.560 with 36 home runs and 95 RBI for the Diamondbacks last season, finishing third in National League MVP voting.
