Manager Derek Shelton said Wednesday that Frazier hasn't played in a spring game since Feb. 26 due to a back injury, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
The 33-year-old signed a one-year, $1.525 million contract with the Pirates in January but appeared in just three Grapefruit League games before the back injury surfaced. Frazier could return to game action before the end of the week, which would put him on track for the start of the regular season.

The Pirates signed Frazier to a one-year, $1.525 million contract Tuesday, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.
Frazier's first five-and-a-half seasons in the majors were with the Pirates before he made stops with the Padres, Mariners, Orioles and Royals. The 33-year-old slashed only .202/.282/.294 this past season in Kansas City and has managed just a .632 OPS over the last three seasons. The Royals declined Frazier's (thumb) mutual option for 2025 on Thursday, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.
Frazier saw only 294 plate appearances in 2024 -- his only campaign with the Royals -- his fewest in a full season since 2016. He also performed poorly by maintaining a .576 OPS with four home runs and three stolen bases. Frazier may be able to find a major-league deal due to his defensive versatility, though his days as a regular starter are likely in the rearview mirror.

Frazier will undergo surgery on his right thumb this week, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.
