• Nationals' Michael Soroka: Stumbles in final spring outing

  Soroka got tagged for six runs on five hits and four walks over 4.2 innings in Friday's Grapefruit League game against the Marlins. He struck out three. The 27-year-old righty won't head into the regular season with much momentum, but Soroka is still locked into a rotation spot for the Nationals. He wraps up his spring with a 7.47 ERA and 13:11 K:BB through 15.2 innings, and his breakout 2019 season with Atlanta is a long time, and multiple serious injuries, in Soroka's past.

• Nationals' Michael Soroka: Sharp in Thursday's outing

  Soroka gave up one run on four hits over four innings in Thursday's Grapefruit League game against the Cardinals. He struck out six without walking a batter. The right-hander built up to 61 pitches (37 strikes) as he faced a number of St. Louis regulars, including Nolan Arenado, Lars Nootbaar and Masyn Winn. Injuries looked like they had completely derailed Soroka's career, but he found some success last season in the bullpen for the White Sox, and he's now in camp with the Nats looking to prove he still has something to offer as a starter. So far so good for Soroka, who's delivered a 9:1 K:BB through his first seven spring innings.

• Nationals' Michael Soroka: Sparkling spring debut

  Soroka walked one and struck out three over three scoreless, no-hit innings during Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Cardinals. Facing a St. Louis lineup that featured a number of likely Opening Day starters, Soroka got Willson Contreras to ground into a double play to end the first inning before including Nolan Gorman and Pedro Pages among his strikeout victims over his final two frames. Soroka is attempting to prove he can still be an effective big-league starting pitcher after finishing 2024 in the bullpen for the White Sox, signing a one-year, $9 million prove-it deal with the Nats in December. The double-play grounder might have been a better sign on that front than the Ks -- during his one outstanding campaign in 2019 with Atlanta, Soroka recorded a 51.2 percent groundball rate, a mark that sunk to 40.3 percent last season.

• Nationals' Michael Soroka: Signs with Washington

  Soroka agreed to terms on a one-year, $9 million contract with the Nationals on Thursday, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. Soroka started last season with a 6.39 ERA and 1.51 WHIP after nine starts with the White Sox. His performance improved dramatically after moving to the bullpen, posting a 2.75 ERA and 1.22 WHIP alongside a 60:20 K:BB over 36 frames as a reliever. The Nationals will attempt to transition Soroka back into a starting role, per Andrew Golden of The Washington Post, but given the 27-year-old's injury history and the fact he hasn't reached 100 innings since 2019, the Nationals may look to limit his workload.

In nine starts this season, Soroka has managed an ugly 6.39 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 24:24 K:BB across 43.2 innings. He will remain stretched out as a long reliever, and Grifol didn't rule out Soroka eventually rejoining the rotation at some point later this season. Brad Keller will take over Soroka's spot in the rotation.

  Soroka (0-4) took the loss Tuesday against the Rays, giving up four runs (three earned) on three hits and four walks over five innings as the White Sox fell 5-1. He struck out four. The right-hander struggled to find the plate, throwing 59 of 102 pitches for strikes, and he didn't get much help from his defense or his offense. Soroka is still only 26 years old, but after missing most of three seasons due to multiple Achilles tears and other injuries, he simply may never regain the promise he showed in 2019. He'll carry a 6.34 ERA, 1.59 WHIP and 20:23 K:BB through 38.1 innings into his next start, which lines up to come this weekend at home against the Guardians.

  Soroka allowed two earned runs on three hits and two walks while striking out three batters across 4.1 innings during Tuesday's 6-5 loss to Minnesota. He did not factor into the decision. Soroka pitched extremely well to begin the game, not allowing a runner to reach base until the fourth inning. However, things fell apart in the fifth when Willi Castro lined an RBI triple to left field followed by an RBI double from Kyle Farmer, at which point Soroka was relieved with the game tied at 2-2. The 26-year-old right-hander still sports a gaudy 6.48 ERA and 1.62 WHIP through seven starts, though he's allowed four earned runs across 9.1 frames over his last two outings. Still, he remains a poor fantasy option heading into his next start -- tentatively scheduled for Sunday against the Cardinals.

  Soroka did not factor into the decision against the Twins on Thursday, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out one over five innings. Soroka walked Alex Kirilloff on four straight pitches to open the bottom of the first inning and appeared to be headed for another rough outing, but the right-hander was able to work his way out of the jam despite a two-out single. Soroka actually shut out the Twins over the first five innings before giving up back-to-back home runs to lead off the sixth. It marked the first time in his last four starts that he was able to make it through five innings, but he sports a dismal 13:14 K:BB through 29 innings on the season to go with his 6.83 ERA and 1.69 WHIP.

  Soroka (0-3) took the loss Saturday in Philadelphia, permitting five runs on six hits and three walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out two batters. Soroka needed a season-high 100 pitches to cover 4.2 shaky innings. The right-hander had a solid start in Kansas City earlier this month, but his other four have all been dreadful. With 15 walks over 24 innings, Soroka's lack of control has been particularly alarming, as he doesn't have the swing-and-miss ability (12 strikeouts) to make up for it. Given how little he's pitched at the major-league level over the last few years, it would be understandable if it takes the former top prospect a while to get his feet under him. That said, this current version of Soroka simply can't be trusted in fantasy leagues.

  Soroka (0-2) took the loss Sunday against the Reds, allowing five runs on five hits and six walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out four. Four of Soroka's five runs allowed came in an interesting third inning that saw him allow two runs on a home run by Christian Encarnacion-Strand to open the scoring, followed by two more runs scoring later in the inning on an infield single by Jeimer Candelario. The six walks allowed were a career high for Soroka, who now sports a 6.98 ERA, 1.76 WHIP and has 10 strikeouts against 12 walks over 19.1 innings. His next scheduled turn in the rotation is tentatively set for next weekend in a tough matchup against the Phillies in the City of Brotherly Love.

Soroka was staked to a 5-0 lead before taking the mound in the first, but he couldn't make it stand -- the right-hander gave up a two-run homer to Josh Naylor in the bottom half of the frame before the Guardians tacked on two more runs between the third and fourth innings, forcing Soroka out of the game before he could qualify for a decision. It's been a rocky start to the year for Soroka -- he's 0-1 with a 6.14 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 6:6 K:BB across his first three starts (14.2 innings). He's currently in line to face the Reds at home Sunday in his next outing.

It was an encouraging effort from Soroka after the right-hander allowed four runs over five innings in his first outing this season. While Soroka should be locked into a starting role in Chicago, he's unlikely to offer much in terms of fantasy production. Soroka's currently lined up for a road matchup with the Guardians early next week.
