  • Pirates' Henry Davis: Back on bench in Bart's return

Davis is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Nationals.

While Joey Bart (back) was out of the lineup for the previous five games, Davis drew four starts behind the dish and went 3-for-17 with a home run and two RBI during that stretch. Bart has made enough progress with his recovery to resume catching duties in Thursday's series finale, and assuming he steers clear of setbacks, he should see the bulk of the starts moving forward.

  • Pirates' Henry Davis: Smacks first homer of 2025

Davis went 1-for-2 with a solo homer and an additional RBI in Wednesday's 6-1 win over the Nationals.

Davis opened the scoring in the fifth inning, when he took a 92-mph fastball from Mitchell Parker deep to left field for a 392-foot solo homer. It was Davis' first homer of the season, and he drove in another run in the fifth frame on a groundout to third base. With Joey Bart (back) day-to-day, Davis has started in four of the Pirates' last five games. Even when Bart has recovered from his injury, Davis should continue to see more playing time after Endy Rodriguez (finger) was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday.

  • Pirates' Henry Davis: Making 2025 debut Saturday

Davis is starting behind home plate and batting ninth against the Reds on Saturday.

The Pirates recalled Davis from Triple-A Indianapolis on Saturday, and he'll be the third catcher on the roster while Joey Bart manages a back injury. Davis was slashing .281/.343/.375 with three stolen bases and two RBI across 35 plate appearances in Triple-A before being called up to the majors.

  • Pirates' Henry Davis: Up from Triple-A

The Pirates recalled Davis from Triple-A Indianapolis on Saturday, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports.

Davis will rejoin the Pirates to provide the big-league roster with some security behind the plate while Joey Bart manages a back injury. With a career .590 OPS, Davis has struggled to find his footing in the majors, but he's batting .281 with two RBI and five runs scored through eight Triple-A contests this season.

  • Pirates' Henry Davis: Beginning 2025 in minors

Davis was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis on Saturday, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports.

Davis seemed to have the inside track to the backup catcher job for much of spring, and he performed adequately by collecting nine hits across 36 at-bats with four extra-base knocks. However, Endy Rodriguez was even more impressive and has secured a roster spot to begin the season. The Pirates presumably would still like to see Davis make an impact in 2025, so he should make his way to Pittsburgh at some point.

  • Pirates' Henry Davis: Chance to be backup catcher

Davis is projected to make the Opening Day roster by Alex Stumpf of MLB.com.

Davis has had impressive moments in spring training, with the team particularly happy that he's hit the ball to all areas of the field. He has a .238 ISO across 23 plate appearances to show for it, though he's also struck out at a 26.1 percent clip. Joey Bart will begin the season as the starter behind the plate, but Davis would potentially start a few times per week if he cracks the roster.

  • Pirates' Henry Davis: Healthy for spring

Davis (hand) was spotted taking batting practice Thursday during the Pirates' second workout of spring training, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Davis appears to have reported to camp without any restrictions after finishing the 2024 season on the injured list due to left hand inflammation. Even before being shut down with the hand injury, Davis had endured a rough second season at the big-league level, slashing just .144/.242/.212 with a 37.2 percent strikeout rate in 121 plate appearances while allowing Joey Bart to emerge as the team's top backstop. Davis fared much better over his extended playing time at Triple-A Indianapolis (.952 OPS in 253 plate appearances), and since the Pirates are already confident in his defense behind the plate, he'll get another chance this spring to stake his claim to the No. 1 catching gig with the big club. Bart will open the spring as the frontrunner for the job, and Davis will also face competition from Endy Rodriguez, who is healthy again after missing nearly all of the 2024 season while recovering from elbow surgery.
