  • Red Sox's Richard Fitts: In line to start Tuesday

Fitts is scheduled to start Tuesday against Philadelphia, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.

After Hunter Dobbins was ruled out for the season due to a torn ACL, Fitts was called up from Triple-A Worchester to fill his spot on the roster. Fitts will also claim Dobbins' spot in the rotation, at least in the short term. Tanner Houck (elbow) seems to be nearing a return from the injured list and could also be a rotation option at some point after he's ready for game action.

  • Red Sox's Justin Slaten: Restarts throwing program

Manager Alex Cora said Saturday that Slaten (shoulder) has resumed playing catch, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.

The Red Sox pulled Slaten off his throwing program last week in an effort to focus on building strength in his shoulder. Now that the team is satisfied with his strength, the right-handed reliever will begin building back up. He remains without an official return timeline, but he figures to still be multiple weeks away from activation.

  • Red Sox's Tanner Houck: Back from assignment, still inactive

The Red Sox returned Houck (elbow) from his rehab assignment Friday, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.

Although Houck's 30-day rehab window is now closed, the fact that Boston has yet to activate him indicates he isn't quite ready to return. The 29-year-old righty posted a 5.74 ERA and 1.53 WHIP across 15.2 innings during his five-start assignment, though he gave up only one run in his final two outings (9.1 IP). He also owns a hefty 8.04 ERA through 43.2 frames in the majors this year, so there's no guarantee he'll have a place in the Sox's rotation whenever he is activated.

  • Red Sox's Jarren Duran: Out of lineup Saturday

Duran isn't starting against the Cubs on Saturday.

The Cubs are sending southpaw Shota Imanaga to the mound, so the lefty-hitting Duran will be on the bench to begin the contest. Duran has a poor .564 OPS against lefties this season. Rob Refsnyder is getting the start in left field for Boston on Saturday.

  • Red Sox's Alex Bregman: Planned playing time revealed

Boston manager Alex Cora said Bregman will play four of the six games on the team's current road trip, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.

Bregman was activated off the injured list last week and played two of three games prior to the All-Star break. He started the first game back from the break Friday and will start again Saturday before getting Sunday off. The manager said Bregman will start Monday and Tuesday in Philadelphia before getting Wednesday off.

  • Red Sox's Lucas Giolito: Hangs in after early trouble

Giolito (6-2) took the loss in Friday's 4-1 defeat against the Cubs, allowing four runs on five hits and two walks across 5.1 innings while recording six strikeouts.

Giolito ran into trouble immediately Friday, issuing back-to-back walks and serving up a three-run homer to Seiya Suzuki before recording his first out. The right-hander recovered well from the rocky start, keeping the Cubs quiet over the next four innings before exiting in the sixth after surrendering a double to Ian Happ. Despite the tough outing, the 31-year-old has now registered at least five strikeouts in six straight starts and owns a 1.66 ERA with a 39:9 K:BB across 38 innings during that stretch. Giolito is slated to make his next start July 23 against the Phillies.

  • Red Sox's Ceddanne Rafaela: Weekly starts at keystone

Rafaela will be added to the mix at second base and possibly play one or two games per week at the position, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports. "Give him one or maybe two starts at second so we can get everybody else in the lineup," Boston manager Alex Cora said.

Occasionally moving Rafaela to second base would allow Cora to get as many left-handed bats into the lineup as possible against righties, and reduce the logjam in the outfield. On the days when Rafaela plays second base, Jarren Duran will patrol center field with Roman Anthony in left and Wilyer Abreu in right, while Masataka Yoshida serves as the designated hitter.

  • Red Sox's Josh Winckowski: In throwing progression

Winckowski (elbow) is in the early stages of a throwing progression at the Red Sox' spring training complex in Florida, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.

Winkowski suffered a right flexor strain at Triple-A Worcester back in mid-May and was recalled and placed on the 60-day major-league injured list in early June. He will not be eligible for activation until early August, and it sounds like it will be longer than that before he'll be an option for the Red Sox.

  • Red Sox's Ronaldo Hernandez: Signs with Boston

Hernandez signed a minor-league contract with the Red Sox on Thursday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.

Now short on minor-league catchers after sending Blake Sabol to the White Sox, Boston will bring in Hernandez to round out Triple-A Worcester's backstop unit. The 27-year-old was released by the Yankees on July 4 after slashing .221/.287/.351 across 87 plate appearances at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, and barring a significant turnaround, he doesn't seem on track to make his MLB debut this year.
