Phillies' Luis Arraez: Rips pair of doubles in loss

Arraez went 2-for-3 with two doubles, a walk and an RBI in Tuesday's 6-3 loss to the Nationals.
The light-hitting infielder tallied a rare showing of multiple extra-base hits, his first such effort since June 30 in Arizona as a member of the Giants. Arraez is targeting his fourth career batting title in 2026, jockeying primarily with Nick Gonzales, Otto Lopez and Gabriel Moreno in the race for the National League crown at this stage of the season. He's hitting an MLB-best .315 in 143 games on the year, and Arraez is batting .291 with two homers, nine doubles, 17 RBI and 14 runs scored over 148 at-bats since being dealt to the Phillies.
Schwarber went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and an additional run scored during the Phillies' 6-3 loss to the Nationals on Tuesday.
Schwarber gave the Phillies a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning after taking Jackson Kent deep to right field for a solo homer. It was Schwarber's fifth home run in his last 10 games and major-league-leading 45th of the season, and he's close to recording 50 homers in back-to-back seasons. He also ranks 10th in the majors in RBI (95) and 11th in OPS (.875).

Phillies' Cristopher Sanchez: Yields five runs in loss to Washington

Sanchez (17-6) took the loss against the Nationals on Tuesday, allowing five runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out five across 6.1 innings.
Sanchez was looking to bounce back from his last outing this past Wednesday against the Astros, when he gave up six runs but still came away with the win. However, he gave up two runs in the first inning before yielding a solo homer to Andres Chaparro in the fifth to tie the game up at 3-3. Sanchez was still in line for the quality start after getting through six innings, but he was brought back out for the seventh and was tagged for two more runs after Jonathan Bowlan gave up a three-run homer to Daylen Lile. Sanchez has allowed at least three runs in four of his last five outings, and he now sits at a 2.93 ERA and 1.22 WHIP over 193.2 innings. He's tentatively slated to face the Mets on the road this weekend in what figures to be Sanchez's penultimate start of the regular season.

Phillies' Grant Holman: Staying put in Triple-A

Holman will remain at Triple-A Lehigh Valley, as Kyle Backhus was recalled to replace Jesus Luzardo (shoulder) on the Phillies' active roster.
The Phillies originally announced that they recalled Holman from Triple-A as a corresponding move for Luzardo landing on the IL, but the team later decided to promote Backhus instead. Holman owns a 3.60 ERA and 1.17 WHIP at the Triple-A level this season and gave up five unearned runs during his lone outing with the Phillies.

Phillies' Kyle Backhus: Summoned to Phillies

Philadelphia recalled Backhus from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Tuesday.
Backhus will make his fourth stint with the big-league club after being called up Tuesday. In 21 appearances this season, the 28-year-old owns a 4.95 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and 20:6 K:BB over 20 innings. Philadelphia sent Jesus Luzardo (shoulder) to the injured list, opening a roster spot for Backhus.

Phillies' Jesus Luzardo: Headed to injured list

The Phillies are placing Luzardo (shoulder) on the 15-day injured list Tuesday, Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. The transaction is retroactive to Sept. 12.
The left-hander was scratched from his scheduled start Saturday against Atlanta due to shoulder stiffness and inflammation, and he's still experiencing some inflammation after taking a couple days off from throwing. Luzardo will be eligible to be reinstated for the final game of the regular season Sept. 27 versus Tampa Bay, but it's not clear if he's actually expected to be available at that point. If he's unable to retake the mound before the playoffs, he will close out the regular season with a 14-5 record, 2.87 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 221:52 K:BB over 178.2 innings. According to Lauber, Luzardo said he is "guaranteed" to be ready to pitch in the postseason, though it's possible he won't be ready to work out of the rotation.
Phillies' Andrew Hoffmann: Back in action at Triple-A

Hoffmann (undisclosed) was activated from the 60-day injured list Friday.
Hoffmann was cut loose by the Diamondbacks on Aug. 20, but it didn't take long for him to find a new landing spot in Philly. He made one rehab appearance at Single-A Clearwater on Sept. 4, when he tossed a scoreless inning, and he's since been reinstated from the MiLB IL. He made his debut for Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Friday, allowing one walk while fanning two over 1.1 frames.
The Phillies optioned Holman to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Sunday.
Holman gave up five runs while recording just one out in his lone appearance for the Phillies this season, but his ERA is still 0.00 because all five of those runs were unearned. His spot in the bullpen was taken by Tanner Banks, who returned from the 60-day injured list.

Banks has been shelved since early July with a left forearm strain, but he was cleared to return after yielding one run with a 12:1 K:BB over seven rehab innings. The 34-year-old will give the Phillies another left-handed relief option.

A spot on the 40-man roster was needed for the return of Tanner Banks from the 60-day injured list. Cairo was added to the Phillies' 40-man roster just before Opening Day but has yet to make his major-league debut. The 25-year-old infielder has slashed .227/.378/.298 with four home runs, 25 stolen bases and a 90:76 BB:K over 128 games with Triple-A Lehigh Valley this season.
Phillies' J.T. Realmuto: Logs three RBI, homers in Sunday's win

Realmuto went 3-for-5 with a two-run home run, an RBI single and an additional run scored during Sunday's 9-4 win over Atlanta on Sunday.
Realmuto put the Phillies up 2-1 early with a two-run homer in the second inning before contributing to Philadelphia's seven-run eighth with a single that brought Bryson Stott home. Realmuto's three hits tied a season high he set twice prior to Sunday's game, and it was also the fifth time he drove in at least three runs. He has a .654 OPS with three steals, 11 home runs and 49 RBI across 425 plate appearances this season.
