The 25-year-old right-hander was just recalled three days ago and has appeared in eight games for the Nationals this season, posting a 2.45 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 7:2 K:BB across 11 innings.
The Nationals transferred Waldron (chest) to the 60-day injured list Saturday.
Waldron landed on the injured list Tuesday with chest inflammation, so his move to the 60-day IL will officially rule him out for the rest of the season. He'll close the book on the 2026 campaign after accumulating a 6.54 ERA and 1.59 WHIP with a 33:11 K:BB across 42.2 innings between San Diego, Toronto and Washington. The Nationals claimed Hampton off waivers from the Yankees on Saturday and optioned him to Double-A Harrisburg.
Hampton has spent most of the season at Double-A Somerset, struggling to the tune of a 9.59 ERA and 2.16 WHIP across 35.2 innings. Despite his poor performance, the Nationals will add him to their 40-man roster and send him to their Double-A affiliate. Matt Waldron (chest) was transferred to the 60-day IL in a corresponding move.

The Nationals reinstated Lovelady (triceps) from the 60-day injured list Saturday.
A triceps strain has kept Lovelady out since late June, but he began a rehab assignment Sept. 1 and has since allowed three earned runs while striking out four batters and walking one across 5.1 innings. Now fully healthy, he could enter the mix for high-leverage work with team saves leader Clayton Beeter heading back to Triple-A in a corresponding move.

Nationals' Erik Tolman: Collects second save

Tolman gave up a run on a hit and a walk in the ninth inning Friday, recording his second save of the season in a 4-3 win over the Angels. He didn't strike out a batter.
The rookie southpaw wasn't sharp, tossing 15 of 25 pitches for strikes, but Tolman was able to escape with the save. He's been scored upon in three straight appearances but also has the Nationals' only two saves over the last month, and with Clayton Beeter jettisoned to Triple-A, Tolman is nominally the top option for the team in the bullpen. Expect Washington manager Blake Butera to continue auditioning new potential high-leverage options over the final weeks with his focus firmly on 2027.

Nationals' Cade Cavalli: Fans nine in Friday's quality start

Cavalli didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 4-3 win over the Angels, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out nine.
The Nationals needed a three-run eighth inning to take Cavalli off the hook for a tough loss, but the right-hander still delivered his 18th quality start of the season on 96 pitches (60 strikes). Cavalli has finally emerged as the ace the team was hoping to get when it selected him 22nd overall in the 2020 First-Year Player Draft -- he hasn't given up more than three runs in a start since July 5, and over his last 12 outings he's reeled off a 2.13 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 89:17 K:BB through 72 innings while posting a 7-1 record. He lines up to make his next start at home next week against the Phillies.

Beeter pitched a perfect eighth inning Friday, lowering his ERA to 4.50 and his WHIP to 1.40 through 48 frames, but the Nationals will send him down to Triple-A nonetheless. Unless the 27-year-old is recalled to replace an injured player, he will spend the rest of the season in the minors, leaving Erik Tolman and Brad Lord as top candidates to pick up saves for the Nats down the stretch.

Nationals' Harry Ford: Battling hand injury

Ford was removed from Friday's game against the Angels due to pain in his left hand/wrist, Mark Zuckerman of NatsJournal.com reports.
Ford reportedly injured his hand during his final at-bat in the sixth inning, and he was lifted for a pinch hitter in the ninth. The Nationals have sent the 23-year-old for imaging to determine the severity of his injury, and an update on his status should come before Saturday's game.
Lile is out of the lineup for Washington's matchup with the Angels on Friday.
With the Angels trotting out left-hander Yusei Kikuchi, Lile will ride the bench for Friday's series opener. The 23-year-old is currently in an 0-for-11 skid and has not reached base safely in his last three games. Dylan Crews will move over to left field and bat fifth for Washington.

Despite launching a solo shot during Wednesday's affair with the Padres, Ruiz will sit out the series opener against the Angels. Harry Ford will catch balls and strikes while batting seventh for the Nationals.
Ruiz went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's loss to the Padres.
The switch-hitting backstop took Walker Buehler deep to lead off the third inning and open the scoring, but the game quickly got away from the Nationals in an eventual 9-2 loss. Ruiz has been in a timeshare with Harry Ford since late August but has been by far the more productive hitter in that time -- over his last 10 games, Ruiz is batting .344 (11-for-32) with two of his 10 homers on the season.

Early (elbow) is tentatively slated to make a rehab start for Double-A Harrisburg on Sunday, MLB.com reports.
The southpaw threw 30 pitches in a bridge league game Tuesday, so he could be ready to handle around 40-to-50 during his upcoming appearance with Harrisburg. Early has yet to make his Nationals debut after being acquired from the Red Sox in July, but he may be able to join the big-league club before the end of the season if all goes well Sunday. Over 17 starts for Boston prior to being shut down with elbow inflammation, Early delivered a 3.44 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 93:34 K:BB through 91.2 innings.

Nationals' Drew Millas: Another finger surgery Friday

Millas will undergo surgery Friday on his fractured left index finger, Spencer Nusbaum of The Athletic reports.
Millas had a procedure in July when he first suffered the injury, but he'll undergo another one Friday because the finger didn't heal as hoped. It will be the third surgery the catcher has had on the finger since last August. There's no word on a timeline for Millas' rehab, but he should be healed well before spring training.
