Top Celtics News

  • Celtics' Sam Hauser: Iffy for Sunday

Hauser (back) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Knicks.

Hauser is in jeopardy of missing Sunday's contest due to lower-back spasms. If the sharpshooting forward is ultimately ruled out, Hugo Gonzalez, Baylor Scheierman and Jordan Walsh would be candidates for increased playing time.

  • Celtics' Jordan Walsh: Removed from rotation Friday

Walsh (coach's decision) went unused off the bench Friday in the Celtics' 98-96 win over the Heat.

With Jaylen Brown (hamstring/knee) and Sam Hauser (thumb) returning from one-game absences and with Nikola Vucevic making his Celtics debut, head coach Joe Mazzulla opted to remove Walsh from the rotation. Though defense is Walsh's calling card, his lack of productivity on the offensive end looks as though it cost him his spot in the second unit Friday. Since moving out of the starting five Jan. 3, Walsh has shot just 38.3 percent from the field and 25.8 percent from three-point range in 18 appearances. Walsh's move outside of the rotation may not necessarily be a permanent one, but even if he gets some minutes in the Celtics' next game Sunday versus the Knicks, he shouldn't be expected to deliver much fantasy value.

  • Celtics' Nikola Vucevic: Productive in Celtics debut

Vucevic finished Friday's 98-96 win over the Heat with 11 points (4-8 FG, 0-1 3PT, 3-4 FT), 12 rebounds, four assists and two steals over 28 minutes.

Vucevic came off the bench in his Celtics debut, a role he hasn't filled since his rookie season with the 76ers during the 2011-12 campaign. The veteran center filled in nicely in his bench role, and while he looked to distribute more than score at times, he still managed to record a double-double while showing his energy on offense with six offensive rebounds. It'll be interesting to see whether Vucevic continues to operate in a reserve role, but if so, he and Payton Pritchard would combine to form a lethal duo off the bench for Boston.

  • Celtics' Jaylen Brown: Game-high 29 points in comeback win

Brown recorded 29 points (11-25 FG, 1-7 3Pt, 6-10 FT), seven rebounds, two assists and one block over 33 minutes during Boston's 98-96 win over Miami on Friday.

Brown committed a game-high seven turnovers and was inefficient from both three-point range and the charity stripe. However, that doesn't take into account the fact that he was the lone Celtic to produce offensively during the first half, including 15 points in the second quarter, as none of his teammates scored more than five points over the first two frames of Friday's contest. Brown has missed two of the Celtics' last five games while working through lingering hamstring and knee injuries, but the All-Star starter continues to produce despite those setbacks. He has scored at least 20 points in 14 consecutive games, and over that span he has averaged 29.1 points, 8.6 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 2.2 threes and 0.9 steals over 35.3 minutes per game.

  • Celtics' Payton Pritchard: Fuels Boston's comeback

Pritchard registered 24 points (8-15 FG, 4-6 3Pt, 4-4 FT), one assist, one rebound and one steal over 36 minutes during the Celtics' 98-96 win over the Heat on Friday.

The Celtics struggled offensively during the first half, with Jaylen Brown being the only player to score more than five points over the first two quarters. Pritchard and the rest of Brown's teammates were much better in the second half, with the former scoring 19 of his 24 points over the final two frames to help Boston overcome a 22-point deficit for the win. Pritchard has come off the bench in each of the Celtics' last three games after being a starter prior to that, but he's proven unfazed by the move while scoring at least 24 points in each of those contests.

  • Celtics' Ron Harper: Not starting Friday

Harper won't start Friday's game against the Heat, Sean Grande of NBC Sports Boston reports.

With Sam Hauser back in action following a one-game absence due to a thumb issue, Harper will slide to the second unit. The two-way player was productive during his spot start in Wednesday's win over Houston, but he isn't guaranteed to see significant playing time Friday.

  • Celtics' Baylor Scheierman: Coming off bench vs. Miami

Scheierman is not in the Celtics' starting lineup against the Heat on Friday, Sean Grande of NBC Sports Boston reports.

Scheierman has started each of the Celtics' last two games (and six games since Jan. 12), but he'll return to the bench Friday due to the return of Jaylen Brown (hamstring/knee) from a one-game absence. Scheierman posted a double-double in Wednesday's win over Houston, the first of his two-year NBA career.

  • Celtics' Nikola Vucevic: Expected to come off bench

Vucevic suggested that he will come off the bench for his Celtics debut Friday against the Heat, Jay King of The Athletic reports.

Vucevic has been an established starter in every season of his NBA career other than his rookie campaign with the 76ers in 2011-12. The Celtics' newest addition expressed his excitement Friday in joining his new team and relayed that he expects that his role in Boston will be different from what it has been for his career. That suggests that Neemias Queta will remain the Celtics' starting center for at least the short term, and with Vucevic coming off the bench, that will mean fewer rotational minutes will be available for the likes of Luka Garza, Amari Williams and Jordan Walsh.

  • Celtics' John Tonje: Dealt to Boston

Tonje was traded from the Jazz to the Celtics on Thursday in exchange for Chris Boucher, a future second-round pick and cash considerations, Zack Cox of the Boston Herald reports.

Tonje is on a two-way contract and has yet to make his NBA debut after being selected by Utah with the No. 53 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. He won't be available for Friday's game against the Heat while the deal is finalized. Tonje is averaging 18.0 points, 4.1 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.0 steals through 32 appearances in the G League this season, and it wouldn't be a surprise if the Celtics dispatched the rookie to Maine to continue his development.

  • Celtics' Nikola Vucevic: Left off injury report for Friday

Vucevic (recently traded) is not listed on the injury report for Friday's game against the Heat, Taylor Snow of the Celtics' official site reports.

Vucevic's absence from the Celtics' initial injury report signals that he's ready to make his team debut Friday following Tuesday's trade away from Chicago. The star big man figures to immediately jump right into the starting lineup, likely pushing Neemias Queta to the bench. Over his last 10 appearances before being dealt by the Bulls, Vucevic averaged 18.6 points, 7.9 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.1 blocks in 31.5 minutes per game.

  • Celtics' Sam Hauser: Not listed on injury report

Hauser (thumb) is not listed on the injury report for Friday's matchup with the Heat, Taylor Snow of the Celtics' official site reports.

It looks like Hauser will be back in action Friday night following a one-game stint on the sidelines, which should result in fewer minutes for Hugo Gonzalez, Jordan Walsh and Ron Harper. Hauser is averaging 9.2 points and 2.6 triples per game this season.

  • Celtics' Jaylen Brown: Will play Friday

Brown (hamstring/knee) isn't listed on the injury report ahead of Friday's game against the Heat, Taylor Snow of the Celtics' official site reports.

Brown was shut down for Wednesday's matchup against the Rockets due to knee soreness and hamstring tightness, but he'll be ready to roll for Friday's clash. He's off to a strong start to February, putting up 30 or more points in each of his first two appearances.

  • Celtics' Amari Williams: Inks standard pact with Boston

The Celtics agreed to a two-year, $2.7 million contract with Williams on Thursday, NBA reporter Marc Stein reports.

The rookie second-rounder latched on with Boston on a one-year, two-way pact this past summer, though he's now been upgraded to a standard deal. The 24-year-old big man has appeared in 13 regular-season games (two starts) so far this season, during which he has averaged 1.7 points and 2.1 rebounds in 8.2 minutes per contest. He'll continue to provide center depth for Boston behind Nikola Vucevic (recently traded), Neemias Queta and Luka Garza.

  • Celtics' Baylor Scheierman: Posts first NBA double-double

Scheierman posted 15 points (5-10 FG, 3-8 3Pt, 2-2 FT), 10 rebounds, four assists and one steal over 23 minutes during the Celtics' 114-93 win over the Rockets on Wednesday.

Scheierman's 23 minutes Wednesday were his lowest as a starter since Jan. 12 against the Pacers (20). The second-year pro was effective while on the floor, finishing as the Celtics' fourth-leading scorer while recording a career-high in rebounds en route to the first double-double of his NBA career. Scheierman has started in each of Boston's last two games and could remain a starter if head coach Joe Mazulla opts to have Payton Pritchard remain in a reserve role after the Celtics traded Anfernee Simons to the Bulls on Tuesday in exchange for Nikola Vucevic.

... See More ... See Less
  • Celtics' Neemias Queta: Protects rim in Wednesday's win

Queta recorded 10 points (3-4 FG, 4-4 FT), 19 rebounds, two assists, five blocks and two steals over 39 minutes during the Celtics' 114-93 win over the Rockets on Wednesday.

Queta showed off his defensive chops during Wednesday's win, serving as the Celtics' anchor in the paint while matching a season high with five blocks. He was also dominant on the boards, with his 19 rebounds being his most in a game since Jan. 7 against the Nuggets, when he hauled in a season-high 20 rebounds. Queta has been productive for the Celtics in his first season as a full-time starter, though how his role will change following Boston's acquisition of Nikola Vucevic from Chicago on Tuesday remains to be seen.
