Edwards-Helaire (illness) won't play Monday against the Saints, Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com reports.
Edwards-Helaire was previously considered doubtful, so it isn't surprising that he won't be making his season debut Monday. Kareem Hunt, Samaje Perine and Carson Steele will continue to hold down the fort in a Kansas City backfield that's without Edwards-Helaire and Isiah Pacheco (fibula). The Chiefs will be on bye Week 6, so Edwards-Helaire's next chance to take the field will be a Week 7 Super Bowl rematch against the 49ers. He first will need to be activated from the reserve/non-football injury list to be eligible to play.

Week 5 would have marked the first week in which Edwards-Helaire would have been eligible to return, but it appears as if the team wants the running back to get an additional week of practice in before having him join the active roster. It likely helps that Kareem Hunt (shoulder) seems confident he'll be playing, meaning the Chiefs will have the full backfield complement of Samaje Perine, Carson Steele and Hunt following Isiah Pacheco's multiple-month leg injury.

Chiefs' Clyde Edwards-Helaire: Another limited practice
Edwards-Helaire, who remains on the reserve/non-football illness list, practiced in a limited capacity Friday.
The Chiefs placed Edwards-Helaire on reserve/NFI prior to Week 1, which ruled him out for at least the first four games of the campaign. The team then designated him for return this Wednesday, opening a 21-day window for him to be evaluated for a potential return to the active roster. Edwards-Helaire so far has managed back-to-back capped sessions this week, and Kansas City's final Week 5 injury report will include a game status for him ahead of Monday's matchup with the Saints. If he's listed as anything other than out Saturday, the team will have until Monday at 4:00 p.m. ET to activate him, which, if it comes to pass, could mean he's in contention to reps out of the backfield immediately along with Kareem Hunt, Samaje Perine and Carson Steele with lead runner Isiah Pacheco (fibula) on injured reserve.

Chiefs' Clyde Edwards-Helaire: Practice window opened
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid confirmed that Edwards-Helaire was designated for return to practice Wednesday, Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com reports.
Though Edwards-Helaire's 21-day evaluation window was opened Wednesday, he didn't take the field that day and instead made his return to practice Thursday for the Chiefs' first official Week 5 session. According to Derrick, Edwards-Helaire is scheduled to take part in scout-team work Thursday, and the running back's progress will be measured over the next few days before a determination is made on his availability for Monday's game against the Saints. Once activated from the reserve/non-football illness list, Edwards-Helaire could push for a role in a Kansas City backfield that currently includes Kareem Hunt, Samaje Perine and Carson Steele while lead option Isiah Pacheco (fibula) is on injured reserve.

Edwards-Helaire (illness) will resume practicing Thursday and should be available for games soon, Ian Rapaport of NFL Network reports.
Edwards-Helaire didn't get much playing time outside of blowouts or clear passing situations last season, but he may take on a larger role now that Isiah Pacheco (fibula) is on injured reserve and likely out until at least November. The Chiefs otherwise have Kareem Hunt, Samaje Perine and Carson Steele as their backfield options ahead of Monday's game against New Orleans, giving Edwards-Helaire a chance to mix in immediately if he checks out fine in practice this week.

Edwards-Helaire is on track to return from the non-football illness list this coming week, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
With Isiah Pacheco on IR, the return of Edwards-Helaire would bolster the Chiefs' backfield depth while Pacheco recovers from his fibula injury. For now, the team's top available RB options are Carson Steele, Samaje Perine and Kareem Hunt.

Chiefs' Clyde Edwards-Helaire: Missing at least four games
The Chiefs are slated to place Edwards-Helaire (illness) on the reserve/non-football illness list Monday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
Edwards-Helaire regularly missed practices during training camp, and he also revealed in July that he deals with post-traumatic stress disorder. His placement on the NFI list will rule him out for at least the first four games of the season and position Samaje Perine for a key backup role behind starting running back Isiah Pacheco. Meanwhile, UDFA Carson Steele bumps up into the No. 3 spot.
