  • Chargers' Justin Herbert: Sharp to begin training camp

Herbert looked in midseason form on the first day of training camp Thursday, Eric Smith of the Chargers' official site reports.

Herbert's highlights Thursday included a 50-yard touchdown pass to Jalen Reagor and a sharp performance in red-zone drills. Reagor's expected to be a supporting piece in a Chargers wide receiver room that drafted rookies Tre Harris and KeAndre Lambert-Smith in the second and fifth round, respectively, while retaining Ladd McConkey, Quentin Johnston and Derius Davis. Harris is slated to sign his rookie contract with the Chargers after agreeing to terms with the team Thursday, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, but Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Mike Williams plans to retire from the NFL rather than play out the one-year deal he signed with the Chargers in March.

  • Chargers' Tre Harris: Signing rookie deal with Chargers

Harris is slated to sign his rookie contract with the Chargers after agreeing to terms with the team Thursday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

Harris initially was unsigned as the Chargers' training camp opened up, but the 2025 second-rounder now is poised to rejoin his teammates at practice after reaching an agreement with the franchise on the same day that it was revealed that veteran wideout Mike Williams planned to retire. As the coming season approaches, Harris will have an opportunity to carve out a key role (that could yield lineup utility in deeper fantasy formats) in a WR corps that also features Ladd McConkey and Quentin Johnston, with Derius Davis, KeAndre Lambert-Smith and Jalen Reagor also on hand to compete for targets.

  • Chargers' Mike Williams: Planning to retire

Williams (undisclosed) plans to retire from the NFL, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

The Chargers had placed Williams on the active/PUP list Monday, but the wideout now has elected to step away from the game as a player. With the 2017 first-rounder no longer in the mix, Ladd McConkey, Quentin Johnston and unsigned rookie Tre Harris profile as the team's top three WRs. After spending last season with the Jets and Steelers, Williams was slated to return to the team that drafted him after signing a one-year deal with Los Angeles in March. Instead, he'll conclude his NFL career with 330 catches for 5,104 yards and 32 TDs over the course of 106 games.

  • Chargers' Najee Harris: Officially placed on NFI list

Harris (eye) was placed on the active/non-football injury list by the Chargers on Thursday.

Per Kris Rhim of ESPN.com, Harris, who sustained an eye injury as the result of a fireworks mishap on the Fourth of July, isn't expected to remain on the list long, according to Chargers GM Joe Hortiz. Once the running back is ready to return to the field, he'll be able to resume practicing, but until then 2025 first-rounder Omarion Hampton figures to see added first-team reps, with Hassan Haskins, Kimani Vidal, Jaret Patterson and Raheim Sanders also currently in the team's backfield mix.

  • Chargers' Najee Harris: Bound for active/NFI list

GM Joe Hortiz said Wednesday that Harris likely will begin training camp on the active/non-football injury list as doctors continue to monitor the eye injury that he suffered during a fireworks incident at a Fourth of July event, Kris Rhim of ESPN.com reports.

Harris remains in the Bay Area as of Wednesday afternoon but is expected to report to The Bolt in El Segundo, Calif. later in the day. Hortiz noted the Chargers have yet to ascertain the extent of Harris' injury, but his agent has called it a "superficial" one, per Thuc Nhi Nguyen of the Los Angeles Times. Once Harris joins his teammates, L.A. is expected to make the aforementioned transaction, but he'll be able to practice as soon as he passes a physical. How Harris and rookie first-round pick Omarion Hampton fare in training camp and the preseason should determine the breakdown of RB touches between the duo at the start of the regular season.
